Leo McGovern, publisher of New Orleans’s Antigravity Magazine (www.antigravitymagazine.com) and author of the webcomic Firesquito (http://firesquito.com/) will be joining the ‘Self-Gratification: The Joys of Independence in Multiple Mediums’ discussion panel to talk about his long and storied history as a self-publisher! 1:30pm in the Theater!

Our new interview with Stan Sakai is now up in the podcast section. Stan is the creator of Usagi Yojimbo and a featured guest at STAPLE! 2009 — only 4 days away!

In a last minute guest addition, Chris Onstad, creator of Achewood will be joining us for STAPLE! 2009! Chris came through town in December and really liked Austin and our world famous BBQ and we’re very excited to have him back for the show.

‘Comics and Comics: A performance by ColdTowne Theater’! The New Movement is Austin’s latest improv and sketch comedy training center. Their instructors have performed all over the country, learned from the best, and have trained hundreds of writers, actors, comedians, and filmmakers. The New Movement approach is designed to ease the performer into improv by finding the truth in comedy at the top of the scene. New classes scheduled all the time! There’ll be killer DJ’s, a performance by nerdcore hip-hop artist Terp2it, and a chance to pick up some awesome pieces of unique and original art, while benefiting local community radio station KOOP! What more could anyone ask for?!?

STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo is the Southwest’s premier event for independently produced comics, zines, art, animation, games, crafts and more! We are pleased to announce the appearance of indie comics icon Jeffrey Brown at STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo!

Jeffrey Brown is the author of nearly a dozen graphic novels. He’s best known for his autobiographical memoirs such as “Clumsy”, “Unlikely” and “Little Things,” but has also received acclaim for his humorous works such as “Cat Getting Out Of A Bag” and “Incredible Change-Bots”. Most recently, Top Shelf has begun publishing Jeffrey’s new series “Sulk”, issues of which will include genre, parody and experimental comics.

Mr. Brown will be located with publisher Top Shelf, in their third consecutive year at STAPLE!, and will participate in a Q&A panel, as will our other special guest, the legendary creator of Usagi Yojimbo, Stan Sakai!

We are back and proud to announce that the 5th annual STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo will be happening on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Monarch Event Center in Austin, Texas!

To commemorate five amazing years of celebrating the best in independently created comics, zines, arts, crafts and animation, we’ve arranged to bring you a very special guest: the legendary creator of Usagi Yojimbo – Stan Sakai! Stan’s been producing comics for over twenty-five years and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Eisner, Harvey, Inkpot, and the American Library Association Award. We are truly pleased and honored to welcome Stan to STAPLE! In 2009!

As usual we’ll keep posting lots of interesting interviews and podcasts to the STAPLE! website. To kick things off we’ve put up audio from Goon creator Eric Powell’s panel at this year’s show. The date for STAPLE! 2009 has been announced! Plan to be in Austin on March 7, 2009 for our special guest Stan Sakai and much more. We are dusting off the web site and will be adding new content soon, including podcasts of last year’s sessions if you missed it.

STAPLE! is today! Come join us at the Monarch Event Center for the best of independent comics and art, with great exhibitors, featured guests, prizes and more.

One of my favorite parts of STAPLE! is of course the parties! As has become tradition the STAPLE! Pre-party will be held Friday night at Austin Books and Comics at 5002 North Lamar Boulevard. Festivities begin at 8pm and run till 11, but feel free to come in early and browse!

This year’s after-party will be held at Red’s Scoot Inn at 1308 E. 4th Street (4th and Navasota), just a few blocks east of I-35. Once again there will be a Live Art Show, another staple of STAPLE!, and the whole thing is a benefit for KOOP Radio!
